Define the spline clearly
A production drawing should identify the governing standard and full tooth definition: module m, pressure angle α, tooth count z, fit/tolerance classes, major/minor diameters and inspection method.

External and internal splines
Manufacturing method depends on whether the spline is external or internal, part size, material, hardness, quantity and accuracy. Ondrives' published shaping capability includes internal and external gear and spline work.

Inspection and fit
Spline inspection may use analytical measurement, span or pin methods, functional gauges or a combination depending on the specification. The intended fit and inspection method should be agreed before manufacture.

Use SplineCALC as an engineering aid
Ondrives SplineCALC can help review spline geometry and terminology. Final production data should always be checked against the drawing and governing standard.

Need help with a specific gear?
Send Ondrives the drawing, model or available gear data. For new designs, include the operating duty and mating-component information so the manufacturing route can be reviewed in context.
Spline fit, geometry and inspection
Splines transmit torque while locating or allowing movement between shaft and hub. A usable specification must define the spline standard and fit system, not just the number of teeth.
Standard and designation
State the complete designation and governing system, for example DIN 5480 or ISO 4156. Preserve module m, pressure angle α, tooth count z, reference diameter and tolerance/fit classes exactly.
Internal versus external
Internal splines can require shaping, skiving or another access-dependent process; external splines may be hobbed, shaped or ground depending on geometry and quality. Shoulders and tool run-out are important.
Fit and inspection
Effective spline fit depends on tooth thickness/space width, flank form, pitch, runout and datum relationship. Inspection method should match the standard, tolerance class, engagement length Le and functional requirement.
SplineCALC is an engineering aid for geometry and designation work. Final production data should remain tied to the governing standard, drawing revision, material, heat treatment, engagement length and the mating member.
